This film is an adaptation of the book “A Low Life in High Heels” the true story of Holly Woodlawn, a “Warhol” protégée which was co-authored by Woodlawn with Jeff Copeland.
Lou Reed’s classic recording captures the transformation of a gawky sixteen year old boy, Harold Danhakl, into the infamous Andy Warhol Superstar, Holly Woodlawn.
This is not just another story about Warhol and his elite entourage. However it is a story of a Miami youth, who is tormented with guilt over his sexual identity, then runs away from home and learns to survive on the streets of Manhattan.
“Low Life in High Heels”, allow us to peer into the lives of the androgynous Holly Woodlawn, frumpy playwright Jackie Curtis and the luminous Candy Darling, the three most famous drag queens of the era. The storyline also follows Andrea “Whips” Warhol, Joe D'Allesandro among other characters which made up the Warhol stable of Superstars. Low Life in High Heels defines this era; we get to know who these characters really were and why they existed. We see how they lived & died and why Holly survived.
Holly Woodlawn's story, takes us on an eye opening journey through the “underground pop culture” of New York City in the late sixties and seventies. It exposes the truth from an eyewitness point of view. This is a story of personal transformation and survival. It is both tragic and hilarious as it portrays the lives of truly unique, creative young talents frantically competing for the favor of Warhol, and the position of Superstar.

This film asks the question, “What is it like to make the transformation from Harold to Holly?” To arrived in New York City as a runaway kid in the late sixties with no money and a completely new identity. To face the real possibility of a sex change operation. To have your intimate relationships literally hinge on the outcome. To encounter the most volatile, lethal, explosive, and creative world that holds the promise of acceptance and fame. Low Life in High Heels answers these questions vividly.
Holly Woodlawn does skyrocket to fame as a Superstar in Andy Warhol’s TRASH, with a performance that prompted Director George Cukor to petition for her nomination for an Academy Award. But fame doesn’t solve all problems, and the opening night of TRASH found Holly in jail for her drunken impersonation of a French diplomat’s wife, who needed some extra cash and decided to empty her bank account.
“TRASH STAR FOUND IN TRASH CAN!” blared Daily Variety.
Mirroring the systematic demise of rock icons of the era, the Warhol entourage fell victim to a life in hyper drive. Holly confronts her own demons as she bounces from penthouse to pavement and back again, with a sense of humor and dignity way beyond her years.
This story is dedicated to those who have known the struggle of being different, endured the fear of rejection, and mustered the courage to survive.
